Tribal Fusion Faire 2011 – Performance Portraits

Tribal Fusion Faire in San Luis Obispo always brings a few new sights, some cool sounds a lot of great smiles.  This is the last major dance festival of the year in Southern California and it never fails to close with good friends and a recap of what these talented dancers have been working on throughout the preceding months.  Wendy of Bali Isle has created a show that mirrors her personal energy in its relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, making space for some great performing artists to show us their moves.  – What more can I say: Check out some images of the performances below, and through the dance links above.

Cairo Caravan 2011 – Performance Photography

Cairo Caravan aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach is by far one of my favorite shows – good food, great people and the kind of community that is only borne of a community of artists working in tandem toward a common goal.  Thanks so much to everyone who worked so hard to get this show off the ground, especially MECDA’s president, Blume Bauer, for having the tenacity to motivate all the people who make it possible.  See you next year!

Tribal Fest 2011!

Well, it’s come and it’s gone yet again.  Here’s some highlights from Tribal Fest 11! – the biggest tribal bellydance show in the world. Three days of performances, somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 total hours of dancing representing more than 15 countries!  Unbelievable.  This show is always  a challenge for me: the dancers bring all their hard work and I’m constantly kept on my toes trying to capture it all.  Below is a little taste of the show and through the dance links above is a full showing of the gallery of performances.

Weathervane Arts – INFUSION:Movement over Malibu

Last year Gigi and I conceived of a fusion event that would be a next chapter in the dance performance event.  With the help of Kim and Riley Carsey and their generous provision of a beautiful venue in Malibu, we produced our first INFUSION, a living theatre dance event aimed at bringing the audience into active involvement with the experience.  More than just your “pay-the-door-fee”, “now-watch-the-performers-and-go-home” event, INFUSION is a full experience dance event with ethnic food and drink provided as part of the show.  The first installment was a shining success and marks a new kind of event, which we will be surely re-producing in the future.

AcroYoga

This one took some time to set up, but the work is always enjoyable, worth the sweat, and the negotiations with gravity as I arm-stretch a superclamp to a chandelier……

Working with acroyogi’s of late.  Great new way to get the stress out.

+ Opal Moon Designs +

I has been sometime since I posted new work. Kerrie of Opal Moon Designs and I had some fun creating fantasy style portraits for her new line a couple months ago. I’ve been so busy trying to kickstart the left side of my brain back into working order that I haven’t yet posted these! This was a lot of fun to experiment with, I was throwing all my chips into this pile and had little idea of what was going to happen. Each frame took about 45 min to pull off and was painstakingly slow and detail oriented. It’s a style that I’d like to continue playing with. Creating the final designs for these remind me of how much I love visual work. I have a bad habit of being all or nothing, all photography and art or all school and study, left brain/right brain. Gotta remember to play one off the other.

Moon Over Morocco, Santa Barbara

Claddagh Irish at Alexandra King's Moon Over Morocco 2010

Alexandra King‘s Moon Over Morocco joined forces this year with Santa Barbara’s International Dance Festival.  Together these two pillar dance events brought together professional and student dancers from around the state, performing disciplines from around the world.  Two years in a row I’ve shot this festival along with MECDA’s Cairo Caravan, Black Sheep’s Tribal Fest, Caba Ribal and a few others.  This year was a little different than the past; Moon Over Morocco has classically been a festival promoting and preserving Middle Eastern folk dances of various kinds.  This year’s combination with the International Dance Festival brought a wider gamut of disciplines including Irish Folk Dance, Modern Bellydance Fusion, Hula Hoop, Line Dancing and Flamenco.
